Some clients feel strongly that they want to leave a legacy for their family or their community. This can take the form of charitable gifting, the creation of foundations, or more simply the creation of family traditions. Capturing family history and recording stories of Grandma's memories could be very important to one family, while another may wish to endow a university or set up a foundation for disease research. The following is an example of a family on the legacy builder track:

Patricia has a wonderful relationship with her daughter Nancy and her grand-daughter Amanda. They have always managed to find time to spend weekends together and to have long phone chats. Patricia is doing her estate planning, and is thinking about all the community issues she is involved with. She would like to begin a family tradition of giving, to pass her sense of community responsibility down through the generations. She would like to set up a donor-advised fund, a sort of mini private family foundation, and create a tradition of choosing the annual recipient of the family gift on each Thanksgiving. She plans to start the fund with a gift of $10,000 and add to it each year, with a larger bequest in her will.
